Sound Progression is a BAME-led organisation offering young people, predominantly aged 11 to 19 years and from disadvantaged areas of Cardiff, creative development opportunities using music as our primary tool of engagement. Our work is about getting more young people choosing, creating and taking part in brilliant music experiences in the places where they live and to facilitate young people’s voice and creativity. We encourage cultural diversity and an inclusive environment free from discrimination and promote the welfare and quality of life of young people by ensuring our provision reflects their needs and is a tool for improving prospects.

Sound Progression delivers bespoke and individualised creative opportunities that support positive expression, self-development, collaboration and shared ownership projects. Formed in 2010 by Cardiff ‘dance music’ pioneer and award-winning music producer Paul Lyons to facilitate a wide range of abilities and experiences from aspiring singers, songwriters, rappers and bands to budding music engineers and producers.

One of our greatest strengths is our pioneering work with disaffected youths. We take a youth work approach to enable them to constructively challenge the personal, social and educational disadvantages they face to lead positive, creative and fulfilled lives. We make early interventions steering them away from destructive influences by offering clear tangible incentives and rewards that responds to young peoples interest in music.

Our initial project (2010-2015) supported over 200 participants, delivering impactful youth-led provision and showcase events across South Wales. We are currently re-developing and strengthening our model, supported by five expert trustees made up of music, arts and youth specialists and with new management to re-launch our programme at five newly developed music studios across the city.
